Structural Testing Facilities

Students of both Civil and Structural Engineeirng will use the structural laboratory, however as the name suggests it will be the structural engineering students who will use its facilities the most. The students will get hands on experience with the equipment while completing their final year projects which will provide him/her with a knowledge of structural testing. The major pieces of equipment available in the laboratory are mentioned below.

 

Testing Rig with 200kN Ram

The testing rig is 3m high by 4m wide. The Denison Ram has a capacity of 200kn and is controlled via computer using Rubicon software. Data acquisition is carried out using StrainSmart software. It is used for stress analysis and structural materials testing at rates of up to 10,000 measurements per second per sensor. The software can address any variable that must be considered in stress analysis testing - from initial data entry, to data acquisition and conditioning.

 

 

 

 

 

System 5000 and 6000 Data Acquisition Systems

Data acquisition is carried out using StrainSmart software. It is used for stress analysis and structural materials testing at rates of up to 10,000 measurements per second per sensor. The software can address any variable that must be considered in stress analysis testing - from initial data entry, to data acquisition and conditioning, to on-line and off-line correction, reduction and presentation of results. The system will accept inputs from strain gages, thermocouples, load cells, and other transducers.

 

 

 

 

Testing Rig with Interchangable Load Cells

This testing rig is equipped with an hydraulic ram and can house various capacity load cells ranging from 50kN-300kN depending on the type of type testing being carried out. The internal dimensions of the rig are 2m x 3m. Data acquisition is carried out by two System 5000 data acquisition systems. As with the System 6000 variables such as load, displacement and strain from tests are logged and stored on the computer with results given in either word or excel format.

 

 

 

Additional equipment available in the laboratory include:

  • Displacment tranducers for measuring deflection
  • Linear strain gauges and rosettes
  • Accelerometers
  • Portable strain, load and displacement reading apparatus
  • Thermocouple Data Acquisition and Thermal Imaging camera
  • Compact 20 Tonne Test Rig
  • Computer controlled Oven
