RoboSlam

Introducing RoboSlam

A large number of members of academic staff and students in our School act as voluntary tutors for a highly effective STEM promotion activity called RoboSlam, an initiative which is led by a steering group composed of lecturers Ted Burke, Frank Duignan, Shannon Chance and Damon Berry.

Roboslam is a distillation of the School's popular RoboSumo academic module for first year engineers (DT066) who design and build a basic autonomous robot that can navigate a table. The RoboSlam workshop compresses the process of designing and building a robot into a 5-6 hour workshop for participants with minimal engineering experience. The supporting online material that has been developed by the RoboSlam team allows the event to be extended in lots of ways to explore different aspects of engineering and technology.

Each year, since it was first developed in 2014, the Roboslam experience has been brought to approximately 275 participants per year in 10-15 workshop events of different sizes. RoboSlam is currently carried out as a wholly voluntary activity by students and staff of the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. Two distinct forms of the workshop have been developed based on demand from partner organisations.

Roboslam is also enjoyed by adults. In May 2016, the workshop format was demonstrated at an engineering education conference in Guimares Portugal.
