Future needs of the electrical engineering sector addressed at inaugural DIT/CIBSE Award Ceremony

2nd October 2003

The inaugural 'Student Presentations and Awards Ceremony' - a joint venture of DIT and CIBSE - is taking place today in DIT Kevin Street. As well as recognising student achievement and officially accepting graduates into the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), it is hoped the event will serve to foster co-operation between higher education and industry groups on issues faced by the electrical engineering sector.

According to Kevin Kelly, DIT Department of Electrical Services Engineering: 'There are many valid concerns expressed by industry that can only be addressed through increased partnership. For example, for many years the lack of electrical services technicians and engineers has been a difficulty for the sector. Through increased co-operation DIT has addressed this issue by providing part-time and whole-time programmes at diploma and certificate level. Further plans are in place to provide a degree in Electrical Services Engineering, along with postgraduate and research opportunities.'

The Certificate/Diploma in Electrical Services Engineering and the Electrical Services Engineering Technician Certificate are two programmes on offer by DIT that are leading the way in meeting the very specific needs of the modern engineering industry. Both programmes instruct students on how to think critically, problem solve, communicate and negotiate, as well as design and manage. They are very student centred and make full use of modern delivery methods such as e-learning.

The certificiate/diploma has been so successful that the programme has seen a 50% increase in total applicants from last year. The modularity of the programme design allows easy transfer from the part-time programme to the whole time programme and vice versa. The part-time certificate programme, which replicates the certificate/diploma in Electrical Services Engineering, has also seen an increase in applicants.
