Inaugural DIT Industry Think Tank takes place in Guinness Storehouse

Professor Brian Norton welcomed senior figures from across a wide spectrum of Irish industry to the inaugural DIT 'Industry Think Tank' in the Guinness Storehouse on Tuesday evening. Industry guests and members of DIT's own management participated in working groups to discuss topics relevant both for higher education and for industry in Ireland.

In his introductory remarks, Professor Norton emphasised DIT's very strong ties with industry and said the Industry Think Tank would provide a crucial forum in which to explore ideas to build on those ties. Outlining his vision for the Institute, Professor Norton said "DIT is unashamedly vocational in its approach to learning and teaching - we are preparing our students for their future careers. We are also committed to the concept of lifelong learning and, as more and more people change direction at some time during their careers, the concepts of adult learning and continuing professional development are very important not just for institutions of higher education, but for industry and society as a whole."

The President gave an undertaking to the participants at the beginning of the evening that their ideas would be acted upon and that they would be kept informed of the implementation between now and the 2004 Industry Think Tank next November.

Ms Margaret Whelan, Head of Industry and Innovation in DIT, said "We organised this evening as an opportunity for our contacts in industry to tell us what they really think of what we in education are doing, and to explore how we can address national priorities together. We are really delighted with the response we have received. Comments have been very forthright and constructive and will enable DIT to focus our ongoing collaboration with industry more sharply."
