The Irish National Bakery team scooped an historic bronze at the European Bakery Championships in Nantes, France earlier this week . The team achieved third place, with France placed first and Denmark second. In a marathon eight hour working day the team was required to produce a range of Butter Pastries, Continental Breads and an Artistic Bread Display.

Mr. Derek O'Brien, Head of the National Bakery School at the Dublin Institute of Technology said he and the Team Coach, Jimmy Griffin, of Griffin's Bakery, Galway were absolutely delighted with the success of the team. "This is a fantastic achievement for Ireland and for the Dublin Institute of Technology. This team has shown that we can compete with the very best Europe has to offer!"

The Coupe d'Europe is held biannually in Nantes and is the premier craft bakery competition in Europe. Ten European national teams competed in this year's competition. The Irish team has earned their place in the bakery premier league, beating off the challenges of Italy, Switzerland and Luxembourg to claim the third placing. The Judges were impressed with the splendid display of product produced by the team which included an artistic piece using a 'Saint Patrick's Day' theme, sourdough breads and butter pastries.
