'Aperturas' - An Interdisciplinary Conference on the Language and Cultures of the Spanish-Speaking World - 29th - 31st January, 2004.

DIT's School of Languages (Departamento de Idiomas), in conjunction with the Consejería de Educación, will host 'Aperturas' ('Openings') - An Interdisciplinary Conference on the Language and Cultures of the Spanish-Speaking World - from the 29th to the 31st January 2004 in Aungier Street.

With the unprecedented upsurge in interest in the language and culture of the Spanish-speaking world, the organisers will welcome to this event not only academics, scholars and teachers in the field of Hispanic Studies, but academics from other disciplines as well as professionals and members of the business community who have an interest in trade, commerce and tourism in Spain and Latin America.

Saturday morning's session will see representatives from the embassies of Argentina, Cuba, Mexico, Chili and Spain making presentations on their countries and their relationship with Ireland. They will be available for a questions and answers session.

The major themes of the conference will include the following:

  • The Spanish language
  • Trade, commerce and tourism in the Spanish-speaking world
  • Spanish-language media, film and theatre
  • Hispanic identities in the 21st century

Keynote speakers will include:

  • Tom Burns Marañón, journalist, writer and Communications Director of Recoletos Multimedia Group
  • Rod Stoneman, Director of the Huston School of Film and Digital Media, NUI Galway and Executive Producer of "The Revolution will not be
    televised.
  • Dra. Lourdes Diaz, Universidad Pompeu Fabra
