arts@dit - graduate exhibition 2005 opens on 01 June

DIT final-year students of fine art, visual communication, interior design, furniture design, design display, photography, media arts and music have combined to mount what will be the most wide-ranging graduate exhibition in the country.  The exhibition, entitled 'creamditexpo', will open on Tuesday 31 May in a number of venues around Dublin's city centre and will be open to the public.

Joanne Kindregan - Habitat

Two well-known artists who are also graduates of DIT - singer Leslie Dowdall and musician Martin Gaffney - will officially open the exhibition at the students' awards ceremony in Dublin City Council Civic Offices, Wood Quay.  In her introduction to the exhibition catalogue, Leslie Dowdall reflects on how her own experience of studying design actually prepared her for quite a different career - 'Learning the skills of design, illustration, drawing, printmaking and photography became an invaluable tool in becoming a resourceful, adaptable and creative individual.' Looking at the paths chosen by her own fellow students, she goes on to say "I like the concept that we are all landscape gardeners with a blank canvas on which to create a world of colour and endless opportunity.  What awaits this year's new crop of graduates?"

Niamh McInerny - Dystopia

Peter Jones, lecturer in DIT's School of Art, Design and Printing, is also the co-ordinator of the graduate exhibition.  He is enthusiastic not only about this year's students' work, but also about the very sophisticated catalogue designed by the students themselves, and about the venues where the work is on show.  "This exhibition is the culmination of a lot of hard work by students, who are after all Ireland's new and emerging artists so it's always interesting to see what direction they are taking.  The catalogue is a superb piece of design by Visual Communications students and really showcases the individual artists' work.  We are also extremely grateful to the various venues who have provided the spaces for the public to view this excellent exhibition - we are once again in the Civic Offices, the IFI, the Gallery of Photography, DIT Mountjoy Square and for the first time the Fine Art exhibition will take place in Broadstone Studios."
