DIT student wins the John Thompson Bursary

A student bursary, established in memory of renowned newspaper man John Thompson, was awarded to Ruth O'Sullivan at the NNI Student Seminar which took place in DIT last week.  Ruth, who hails from Cork, is a student on the MSc in Advertising programme in DIT's Faculty of Business.  John Thompson, who began his career in advertising as a copywriter, was described as a newspaper veteran.  He was involved in the establishment of the Sunday World in the 1970's, and was also associated with the Irish Farmers Journal, the Irish Daily Star and more recently masterminded the launch of Ireland on Sunday.  He became Chief Executive of Associated Newspapers Ireland in 2001.  He died just a year ago, following a long illness.

The bursary established in his honour was presented to Ruth O'Sullivan by Mr. Paul Drury, Executive Editor Associated Newspapers, and Mrs. Geraldine Thompson, widow of Mr. Thompson.  Other speakers at the event included Mr. Frank Cullen, Co-Ordinating Director of NNI (National Newspapers of Ireland), and Jo Collins, Group Sales Manager, Independent Newspapers.
