NIBS Case Competition 2007

Dublin Institute of Technology, Faculty of Business, Dublin, Ireland

25th - 30th March, 2007

The Network of International Business Schools (NIBS) Case Competition is an annual undergraduate case study based competition open to members of the NIBS network; a network of some 70 business schools worldwide.  This year the NIBS competition is hosted at DIT for the first time.

We are delighted to extend a warm welcome to the finalists for this year's competition who are:

  • Bishop's University, Quebec, Canada.
  • Concordia University (John Molson School of Business), Canada
  • Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland
  • Hanze University, Groningen, The Netherlands
  • Helsinki School of Economics, Finland
  • Memorial University, Newfoundland, Canada
  • South East Missouri State University, USA
  • Universidad Del Istmo, Guatemala

The competition runs from Monday through to Friday with a variety of social events for the participants and their student mentors; all DIT marketing students as well as exchange students from the USA, Canada and the Czech Republic.

Teams will take part in a random draw at the Welcoming Ceremony on Sunday, which will place them in one of two pools and establish the round robin schedule.

Each pool will be comprised of four teams. Each team in each pool will compete head-to-head against each of the other three teams in its pool. Competing head-to-head means that a pair of teams prepares the same case to the same panel of judges.

The judging panel (46 individual judging slots in total!) is drawn from DIT and industry practitioners who will score each team on an eleven-point scale, i.e., the total of the points to both teams must be eleven. There are no ties. In addition, the winning team receives 30 points.

The starting times for both the preparation and the presentation phases for each team are staggered so that the team can present their completed analysis to the same judge panel one after the other. This runs from Monday to Wednesday.

On Friday the top two teams from each pool play in the semi finals and the final follows immediately.

Each day we will update the NIBS website ( www.dit.ie/nibs) so you can watch the progress of all the teams and catch a glimpse of the social side with (edited) photos of the nights' events.

All this is has been possible only with the generous help of so many people in the past months as well as the assistance promised for the week. We would like to thank Paul O'Sullivan, Director of the faculty, for agreeing to host this event; Kate Ui Ghallachoir of the School of Marketing for unstinting support; Paula and Kasia in the School Office; Aidan Walsh for all the design, layout and technical help; Stacy Mac Carthy for the essential food, drink and everything else; Anne Griffin of Abbey Conferences for the programme of events; Karen Rafferty for organizing the students; the porters of Aungier Street for keeping it all running; Liam O'Donnell for the equipment; ECCH for their help with the case material; Tommy Reid for getting this ready in record time; Stephen McDermott for the website updates and all the students who have volunteered to help throughout the week. In particular, we would like to thank all the judges from DIT, visiting academics and all those from industry who continue to support DIT.
