Naas, 16 October 2008:  Utopia Ballitore, an exhibition presenting a detailed study and analysis of the Co. Kildare village, was officially opened at Aras Chill Dara in Naas by the Mayor of County Kildare, Councillor Senan Griffin.

The exhibition presents a detailed study and analysis of the village of Ballitore in south Kildare and a proposal by the students of Third Year Architecture, Dublin School of Architecture, Dublin Institute of Technology to make it a sustainable and self-sufficient village for the future.

Ballitore was founded on Quaker idealism in the eighteenth century and this unique heritage is still important to the local community. The projects exhibited are based around the themes of Work, Rest and Play and the needs of the village, with the students creating architectural typologies for this new utopia.

The exhibition runs to 14th November 2008 and is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue edited by Elizabeth Gaynor and Rae Moore which is available from Kildare County Council and the RIAI Bookshop, price €10.00.

Explaining the background to the project, Dermot Boyd, Yearmaster for Third Year students in the DIT School of Architecture, said: "Ballitore was founded on Quaker idealism in the eighteenth century and this unique heritage is still important to the local community. The projects exhibited are based around the themes of Work, Rest and Play and the needs of the village, with the students creating architectural typologies for this new utopia."
