Torthaí Comórtas Grianghrafadóireachta
Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Bhaile átha Cliath
íomhá '08

I mí Feabhra 2008 thug Oifig na Gaeilge agus Scoil na Meán, Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Bhaile Átha Cliath cuireadh don phobal páirt a ghlacadh i gcomórtas grianghrafadóireachta eisceachtúil, íomhá ’08. An téama a bhí ag an chéad bhliain den gcomórtas ná ‘An Ghaeilge Bheo’, agus tugadh spreagadh do dhaoine tabhairt faoi íomhánna a ghlacadh le léiriú a fháil ar an teanga i 2008.

An aidhm a bhí leis an gcomórtas ná léargas a fháil ar smaointe an phobail i leith na Gaeilge mar theanga chomhaimseartha, bríomhar agus beo agus theastaigh ón lucht eagraithe deis a thabhairt do gach duine páirt a ghlacadh in imeacht faoin Ghaeilge. Chríochnaigh an comórtas ar an 30 Márta agus ba iontach an léargas a thug na híomhánna ar shaol comhaimseartha na Gaeilge.

Eibhlín Ní hír, a bhain an dara duais in íomhá ’08, le John Gunn ó John Gunn Camera Shop agus a gharmhac Max.

Bhí an comórtas oscailte do chách agus fuarthas iontrálacha ó cheann ceann na tíre agus ó thar lear. Tar éis dian mholtóireacht, is ar Eloise Ní Ríordáin as Baile na Manach i mBaile átha Cliath a bronnadh an chéad duais de €1,500. Bhí dearbhán le haghaidh siopa ceamara John Gunn, ar Shráid Loch Garman, Baile átha Cliath agus saoire Gaeltachta le hOideas Gael mar dhuaiseanna don dara agus don tríú háit. Is í Eibhlín Ní hír as Inis Eoghain i gContae Dhún na nGall a bhuaigh an dara duais agus Frainc Mac Cionnaith as Caisleán Uidhilín i gContae an Dúin a bhuaigh an tríú áit sa chomórtas.

Léiríonn na trí ghrianghraf gnéithe éagsúla de shaol na Gaeilge; úsáid an nuatheicneolaíocht leis an teanga a chur chun cinn; an suim atá ag daoine sna healaíona traidisiúnta Gaeltachta agus pobail ag teacht le chéile ar mhaithe le feasacht chultúrtha agus cearta teanga a chosaint. Bronnfar na híomhánna a bhain an comórtas ar Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Bhaile átha Cliath agus cuirfidh siad go mór le bailiúchán ealaíne na hInstitiúide. Beidh siad ar thaispeáint i gcampais éagsúla na hInstitiúide amach anseo.
Bhí caighdeán na n-iontrálacha i gcoitinne an-ard agus ba iontach an réimse ábhair a bhí sna grianghraif – gach rud ó pháistí i naíonraí agus páirteach in imeachtaí scoile go ciorcal comhrá sa cheaintín go seamróga agus spraoi ar Lá Fhéile Pádraig. Ba mhaith le lucht eagraithe an chomórtais buíochas a thabhairt do Foras na Gaeilge, Oideas Gael agus Foinse a rinne urraíocht ar an gcomórtas, do mholtóirí an chomórtais agus go háirithe do gach duine a ghlac páirt in íomhá ’08.

Tá súil ag lucht eagraithe an chomórtais go mbeidh fás agus forbairt ar ‘íomhá’ sna blianta amach romhainn agus go mbeidh an fuinneamh agus spleodar céanna le sonrú sna híomhánna is a bhí in iontrálacha na bliana seo. Bigí ar faire amach do ‘íomhá ‘09’!

Photography Competition

In February 2008, the Dublin Institute of Technology’s Oifig na Gaeilge and School of Media invited the public to take part in a unique photographic competition, íomhá ’08. An Ghaeilge Bheo - Irish: The Living Language was the theme for this year’s competition, which gave people a chance to submit a visual image which best represents what the language means to them.

The aim was to capture the public’s perceptions of Irish as a modern, vibrant, living language and to encourage both fluent Irish speakers and people without any Irish to engage with the language and to participate in an Irish language event. The competition closed on March 30th and the entries received gave a great insight into the Irish language in 2008.

The competition was open to all and entries were received from all over Ireland and from overseas. After much deliberation on the part of the judging panel, the first prize of €1,500 went to Eloise Ní Ríordáin of Monkstown in Dublin. The runner-up prizes of a voucher for John Gunn’s Camera Shop and a Gaeltacht holiday from Oideas Gael went to Eibhlín Ní hír from Inishowen in Donegal and Frainc Mac Cionnaith from Castlewellan in Co. Down.

Each of the three photographs captures a different aspect of modern Irish; the use of modern technology to accommodate the language, the renewed interest in traditional Gaeltacht arts and communities coming together to promote cultural awareness and to protect language rights. The winning photographs are to be presented to the Dublin Institute of Technology as worthy additions to their art collection and will be displayed around the Institute’s city campuses.

The standard of entries submitted was in general very high and the variety of images was inspiring – everything from first days in school to conversation groups in work, to shamrocks and spraoi on St. Patrick’s Day. The competition organisers would like to thank Foras na Gaeilge, Oideas Gael and Foinse for their sponsorship of the competition as well as the judges and indeed everyone who took part in íomhá ’08.

We hope to build on the success of this year’s competition in the coming years, and that the images will have the same energy and vibrancy as the ones submitted to this year’s competition. Keep an eye out for ‘íomhá ’09’!
