The President of Fairtrade Ireland presented Professor Brian Norton with a certificate at a ceremony in the institute earlier this month and commended all those who helped to realise this achievement, in particular Martin Lynam, the Catering Manager in DIT Bolton St and Richard Smith, Buildings Manager, who together worked tirelessly over the past five years to obtain this status. In order to achieve certification, the team had to ensure that all coffee sold was Fairtrade, whilst ensuring that other Fairtrade products were available to customers and run educational events on the benefits of choosing Fairtrade products.

The President also recognised Larry McGrath, Regional Manager of ARAMARK/Campbell Catering for his constant support to the team on site to ensure they achieved their goal of Fairtrade Status at DIT Bolton St.

The DIT Fairtrade Steering Group is continuing to work towards the goal of having Fairtrade status for the entire Institute by the end of the 2009/10 academic year. This target has been assisted recently when the Students’ Union announced that the DITSU shops are now stocking only Coffee which is Fairtrade. If you would like to assist with the goal of achieving full Fairtrade status for DIT please email Brian.Gormley@dit.ie to get involved.
