A Christmas fundraising campaign by students in DIT has seen donations increase by 400%. Over the last month, DIT students have been busy collecting cash donations, hampers and over 500 brand new toys for St. Vincent De Paul. Now, thanks to the generosity of DIT students and their success hundreds of vulnerable children and families in need across Ireland will have a happier Christmas.

Anita Conway, Head of the DIT Societies Office described the amount of presents raised as "epic". "We are absolutely overwhelmed by the students’ generosity. Hundreds of DIT students, all 140 Clubs and Societies and the Students Unions got behind the appeal. The result has been phenomenal and this year we have seen a 400% increase in donations on last year.”

This increase in giving mirrors the large increase in volunteering among students in DIT over the past year. Over 2,500 DIT students volunteered over the year, with their combined contribution having been calculated at €1.4 million. According to Anita: “Voluntary work is growing in popularity as the recession continues. This year students have more time to volunteer as there’s less part-time work. They’re also conscious that the experience gained by volunteering will help them get a job when they graduate. Also they want to help their communities because they’re seeing people they know affected by the recession”.

Indeed, the students’ generosity couldn’t have come at a better time. Everyone has less money in their pockets these days, so it stands to reason that Ireland's charities, which rely for the large part on the generosity of the public, are feeling the pinch too. Figures suggest that, in general, donations are down by 10, 20 and in some cases 30%. On the other hand, demand for services from charities like SVP has risen in the last year. Indeed the Society of Vincent de Paul is reporting an increase of one-third in calls for assistance this year.

Níos mó ná 500 bronntanas bailithe ag mic léinn DIT do Chumann Naomh Uinseann de Pól

Tá os cionn 400% d’ardú tagtha ar líon na dtabhartas bailithe ag mic léinn DIT ina bhfeachtas bailiúcháin don Nollag i mbliana. Le mí anuas, tá mic léinn DIT tar éis tabhartais airgead, ciseáin Nollag agus os cionn 500 bréagán nua a bhailiú do Chumann Naomh Uinseann de Pól. A bhuíochas do chineáltas mhic léinn DIT, beidh Nollaig níos fearr ag na céadta páistí agus teaghlaigh ar an ngann chuid trasna na hÉireann.

Dúirt Anita Conway, Ceannasaí Oifig na gCumann, DIT go raibh líon na mbronntanas a bailíodh, thar barr ar fad. “Tá flaithiúlacht na mic léinn tar éis ionadh a chur orainn. Thug na céadta mic léinn trasna na hInstitiúide; an 140 cumann agus club i DIT agus Aontas na Mac Léinn lántacaíocht don bhfeachtas. Tá torthaí na hoibre dochreidte agus i mbliana tá 400% d’ardú tagtha ar líon na dtabhartas ón bhliain seo caite.”

Tá ardú mór tagtha chomh maith ar líon na mac léinn ag déanamh obair dheonach le bliain anuas. Chuaigh os cionn 2,500 mac léinn i mbun obair dheonach i rith na bliana agus ina iomlán, is fiú €1.4 milliún a gcuid iarrachtaí. Dúirt Anita, “Tá níos mó tóir ar obair dheonach de réir mar a leanann an meathlú geilleagrach ar aghaidh. Tá níos mó ama ag mic léinn i mbliana oibriú go deonach mar nach bhfuil an oiread sin obair pháirtaimseartha ar fáil. Tuigeann na mic léinn go gcabhróidh an taithí a fhaigheann siad ó obair dheonach go mór leo agus iad ag lorg oibre tar éis dóibh críochnú ar an gcoláiste. Le cois sin, tá siad ag iarraidh cabhrú lena bpobal féin mar go bhfuil aithne acu ar dhaoine atá an meathlú geilleagrach ag goill orthu.”

Ní thiocfadh le cineáltas na mac léinn a theacht ag am níos fearr. Tá níos lú airgid i bpócaí gach duine ar an aimsir seo agus ar an ábhar sin, tá na carthanachtaí síos leis chomh maith agus iad ag brath ar chineáltas an phobal. Dé réir na bhfigiúiri, tá ísliú de 10, 20 agus uaireanta 30% tagtha ar líon na dtabhartas, go ginearálta. Ach ar an lámh eile, tá an téileamh ar sheirbhísí ó charthanachtaí ar nós Cumann Naomh Uinseann de Pól ardaithe le bliain anuas.
