DIT has launched a free Smartphone application (app) that gives students practical information right to their phone. Students can check their e-mail, view webcourses material; check the library database; check the module catalogue; and find out about news and events happening on campus. DIT is the first HEI in Ireland to release a smartphone app aimed at students and staff.

You can watch a short video of the app in action here:

The app is available for the iPhone, iTouch and android smartphones and if you have a compatible phone it can be downloaded from the relevant app store / android market. Simply search for “DIT”. The app will also be available on the Bada platform (Samsung apps) thanks to the support of Samsung Ireland.

The app was launched on Thursday, September 2nd by Eamon Ryan, TD, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, and Professor Brian Norton, President of DIT. Sarah McGovern, past SU President of DIT was also present at the launch.

The app was developed by a cross-institutional working group with members from Campus Life, the Learning Teaching and Technology Centre (LTTC), Public Affairs, the Library, Information Services, and the Students’ Union. The app was developed by an Irish software development company, called iMobile.

While the current version of the app accesses many services via a web browser, it is planned that future updates will give a better user interface. All feedback is welcome.
