The new DIT movie trailer, launched last week by Minister for Communications Eamon Ryan, is already the top-rated video in the education sector in Ireland. The 3-minute movie trailer is short, humorous and designed to be promoted via social media networks.  A satire of movie trailers and current cult movies such as Twilight, it was written, directed, produced and stars current DIT students and DIT alumni.

All of the participants are or were involved in DIT Societies of Drama and Media, including director Conor Mulhern who graduated from the DIT School of Media in 2004 and now runs his own audio visual and graphic design business called Eyeon.  The trailer is a taster to encourage students to check out the wide variety of activities taking place in DIT throughout the year, including those organised by the 80+ societies and 40+ sports clubs.

The movie trailer is one of a number of initiatives introduced by DIT Campus Life to help new students to find out more about college.  According to Professor Brian Norton, DIT President, “Getting comfortable with college and getting involved in campus life are really important aspects of the student experience.  This innovative campaign is fun but it aims in particular to help new students to make the most of their opportunities.  I’d like to thank the students and graduates who wrote, produced, directed and starred in the movie for giving their time and for using their experience of college life to help new students.”

This entire project was managed and implemented by DIT Campus life which each year develops a campaign to promote the message of getting involved in college life and as a consequence having a better student experience.  In addition to ‘DIT the movie’,  they also launched an induction for new students on Facebook and within hours of launching more than 400 new students had signed up and were communicating with DIT and with each other.  According to Brian Gormley, Manager of Campus Life in DIT, “Traditionally students starting their college term in Ireland are given information folders in hard copy which is time consuming, costly and can weigh students down literally.  We decided to find more innovative and cost effective solutions to provide important information to new students, using the social media channels they normally use themselves.”
