Team Brilliant Ltd., winners of the DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise Competition

The winner of this year’s hotly contested DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise competition final was Team Brilliant Ltd. Studying International Languages and Business the team submitted a business plan for a new start-up company registered in Kenya offering solar-powered LED lamps for the African market. The team comprising Lucy Nzeymana, Viktorija Platake (captain), Ru Hui Yee and Lin Lin Marchant, made an excellent presentation of their plan to the judging panel on the night. The winning team were also awarded the Michael A Griffin memorial award for the most innovative product.

The final took place in DIT Cathal Brugha St on March 23rd and the result was so close that the judges decided to combine the prize money for 1st and 2nd place so they could offer the team in second a bigger proportion of the prize money to reflect the closeness of the result. The team who came first was presented with a cheque for €2500 and the team who came second (Team EMHF) received €2000. Team EMHF had proposed a business plan for Healthy Treats - a local business designed to provide a range of nutritionally balanced and healthier fast-food options. There were four team members: Fiachra Kenny, Marta Kencler, Hajnalka Krizsany, and Eleanor McCarthy. All are students on the BSc in Culinary Entrepreneurship programme.

The runners-up were also very highly commended and all four teams were congratulated for the quality of their presentations, their professional approach and their ability to deal with the probing questions asked by the judging panel after each presentation.

Team Surge with judges Tom Flanagan and Rae O’Neill (Bolton Trust)

The two runners-up were team Surge studying Product Design and team YourChoiceTV.com studying Business Management. The Surge team (Sebastian Aske, Grainne O’Carroll, Robert Palmer and Ian Burns) developed a new concept for a universally designed ticket vending machine, the “FEEL”.  This product aims to make touch screen technology accessible to visually impaired users through tactile feedback.  YourChoiceTV.com (Luke O’Rourke, Peter Riordan and Terence O’Neill) submitted a business plan for a free on-line TV player site that is legal, safe and easy to use.

Team To Go Coffee Shop was awarded €250 for the business plan with the best set of accounts.
