DESIGN DIT opens in Smithfield

24 October 2011:

Design DIT opens in The Complex in Smithfield (near the former Lighthouse Cinema) on Tuesday 01 November.  The exhibition is part of Design Week and Innovation Dublin, and the purpose is to showcase some of the best examples of design by DIT graduates in the last decade.  Thirty-four designers will exhibit pieces of their work and the accompanying catalogue gives a brief account of which area of design they studied and where they are now.  For example, you might recognise pieces by furniture designer Jenny Walsh, who graduated in 2009 and who set out to design a range of furniture ‘with a sense of humour and personality’.  Kathryn Payne is also a furniture designer, who graduated this year and won both the Student Academic Excellence Award and the Duff Tisdall Award.  A mirror designed by Kathryn was chosen for the Dublin Contemporary Lounge Bar. Both Kathryn and Jenny are continuing to design here in Dublin.  Stephen Banville graduated in 2008 with a BSc in Product Design and went on to study for an MA in Design: Product + Space at Kingston University in London.  Stephen has set up his own studio, Banville-Hardie which exhibited work during London Design Week 2011.  Paul Woods is a  2010 graduate of Visual communications, achieving first class honours. Paul’s final year iPhone app project was awarded winner of the ‘New Media’ category in the 2010 IDI Graduate Awards.  Paul has since moved to Berlin for an internship with the renowned Edenspiekermann Design Studio.

The exhibition will be open every day this week, including Saturday, so please come along to see some really outstanding design, and encourage your friends to come too.  Organised by Kieran Corcoran and colleagues in the School of Art Design and Printing, this exhibition is a very significant contribution to  Innovation Dublin.  It is a reminder of the excellent designers who have graduated from DIT and an inspiration to current and future students of design.

The exhibition takes place in The Complex, Smithfield, Dublin 7 and will be open from Tuesday 01 November to Saturday 05 November.  Please come along to see it and tell your friends!
