DIT GAA was in the spotlight last Sunday when the Dublin Senior Hurling team defeated Kilkenny, winning their first Division 1 League title in seventy two years!   Forty-two thousand spectators were in Croke Park to see Dublin win by twelve points.   Quantity Surveying student Tom Brady kept the shackles on Kilkenny’s Eddie Brennan at full back, while Engineering student Peter Kelly mopped up all the breaks around the Dublin Full back line. Up front, Transport & Logistics student Paul Ryan finished the day as top scorer with nine points, including five from frees.  Marketing student David Tracey was introduced up front and bagged a point at the end of the game, bringing the final score to Dublin  0-22, Kilkenny 1-07.  Accounting and Finance student Paul Schutte and Sub Goalkeeper Finn McGarry from Business Studies were also in the panel.

DIT also had good representation on the opposing Kilkenny panel, with three students on the subs bench - Pat Hartley, studying Quantity Surveying; Leisure Management’s Eoin Murphy; and Michael Murphy - a metal fabrication apprentice.

The final of the Cadbury’s U21 All-Ireland football final between Galway and Cavan took place before the hurling final, and DIT students were in evidence for that game also, playing for Cavan.  They included Goalkeeper and DIT Gaelic Football Club Chairman Alan O’Mara, studying Journalism; Damien Barkey, studying Engineering; Gearóid  McKiernan studying Leisure Management and Aidan Moran studying Human Resource Management.  In spite of their efforts, Galway won the title, but DIT hurling and football had a very good outing!
