A fresh approach to education as DIT partners with Musgrave to launch Diploma in Fresh Food Management

The fresh food and produce sector industry is on the threshold of an exciting new phase as more and more consumers are looking towards fresh and healthy food choices. In response DIT, in partnership with Musgrave and its retail partners has launched a Diploma in Fresh Food Management. This innovative work-based course, which is the first of its kind in Ireland, is being offered exclusively to SuperValu and Centra employees.

According to Colin Hughes, School of Retail, DIT; “ DIT has a long standing and mutually beneficial relationship with Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland, not only in terms of providing training as part of Musgrave’s commitment to staff development, but our industry partnership is also reflected by the fact that Musgrave act as mentors to DIT student entrepreneurs, offer internships and work experience and share their experience and knowledge at careers fairs, presentations, and career-focused workshops and seminars. Our relationship also involves many DIT graduates having gone on to have successful careers with the Group.

The Diploma in Fresh Food Management will be the third DIT programme, designed specifically for employees of Super Valu and Centra and it will help to further develop the skills and knowledge of participants in what is a vitally important area of the business. This new course has been designed to equip students with the tools and knowledge they will need to manage the fresh food category in store as well as helping them to develop their broader business knowledge. The course will develop students’ management capability and provide opportunities to expand their skills, while gaining real insight into the strategies and operations that play a vital role in the Fresh Food Category. An innovative mix of learning approaches, coupled with a top quality delivery team will ensure that participants develop their expertise in both Fresh Food Management and wider retail operations

Speaking about the programme, Shea Fahy, HR Director for Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland said, “We are delighted to announce the launch of a new Diploma in Fresh Food Management. Through programmes such as the Diploma in Fresh Food Management we are continually raising the bar for Fresh Food Management in Ireland.”

Applications are currently being received for the course, which commences in September 2011. This course is being offered in addition to a Bachelor of Business Studies (Hons.) degree in Retail Management and a Diploma in Retail Management, all run under a partnership agreement between DIT and Musgrave.
