15 September 2011: Once again, the city of Dublin will showcase a wide range of innovation, creativity and design during the third annual Innovation Dublin festival. The festival aims to provide Dubliners - whether they’re entrepreneurs, students, researchers, artists or large corporations – with an opportunity to discuss, promote and celebrate innovation in the city. This year, the festival runs for even longer, spanning four weeks from 17 October to 18 November, and there will be a particular focus on design. DIT, along with companies and organisations across Dublin, will host a number of Events during the festival and we hope to welcome new and old friends at each of the Events.

Event: Be inspired, be an enterpreneur

Description: Guest of honour Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD will be joined for this lunchTime Event by two successful Irish entrepreneurs who are also DIT graduates - Ray Nolan (founder hostelworld.com and worky.com) and Maurice Mortell (Data Electronics). The audience will have an opportunity to hear their experiences but also to ask questions about the challenges of setting up and running a business. This is the first in this year's series of "Be Inspired" Events, organised by DIT Hothouse. The Event is sponsored by Dublin City Enterprise Board. The Event will take place in the Gleeson Theatre, DIT Kevin Street - entrepreneurs are invited to pre-register.

Event: Afraid of the dark? Innovation in Lighting Technology

Lingle: Next generation of online language learning tools

DIT School of Computing lecturers Dr. John Kelleher, Dr. Brian McNamee and Dr. Noel Fitzpatrick present a talk on Lingle - a web-based service designed for teachers and learners of English. Lingle helps teachers automatically find and build complete lesson plans and materials from authentic real news sources. It uses cutting edge advances in machine learning and computational linguistics research to automatically highlight grammar in use and vocabulary. This talk describes the computer science research from which Lingle was developed and how it is helping to transform language learning and teaching.

Event: Tunepal: Tracking Irish traditional music around the world

Venue: DIT, Kevin St.

Description: Dr. Bryan Duggan, DIT School of Computing will discuss Tunepal, winner of the DIT Best Invention 2010 and the world's leading search engine for traditional Irish music. Tunepal enables musicians to search over 17,000 scores by playing a phrase of music on a traditional instrument such as flute or accordion. Having originally emerged from Bryan's PhD research, it is now available online and as mobile apps for iPhone and Android devices. By tracking its use Bryan shows in this talk how Irish music has become a global cultural phenomenon.

Event: Innovation in collaboration: DIT students learning with communities

Venue: Dublin City Council Civic Offices

Description: Showcase of collaborative projects between DIT students and community groups/ not-for-profit organizations. In 2010/11 approximately 1,200 DIT students across all disciplines and levels were involved in projects and research with over 100 community partners, as part of their studies, for mutual benefit. Projects ranged from computing students working on computer applications and systems with Irish charity Wells for Zoe in Malawi, to chemistry students hosting an on-line discussion board with inner-city Leaving Certificate chemistry students, to Tourism Marketing and Management students carrying out surveys on attitudes to road safety and making recommendations for tourism, with the Garda Road Safety Unit. Note: the exhibition will be staged in the atrium of the Civic Offices, which are open Monday to Friday only.

Event: The largest computer games design workshop in the world

Description: DIT welcomes you to a one-day workshop with the internationally famous games guru, Ernest Adams. Sponsored by DIT, the Irish Computer Society and Microsoft Ireland, this is a unique opportunity to learn the basics of game design including core mechanics, gameplay, user interface, concept art, level design, and more. Working in teams you will put what you learn into practice. You can also win XBOX 360s and games on the day! Participation is free but to avoid disappointment register early - www.comp.dit.ie. Event: DIT Hothouse innovation showcase

Description: The showcase celebrates the success of the Hothouse Venture Programme entrepreneurs who represent the dynamism and enterprise that exists in Ireland. Thirty-two graduates of the 2011 Programme will showcase their technology businesses through 1-minute elevator pitches to an audience of entrepreneurs, industry experts and the investment community. The Event also honours the achievements of DIT researchers who have succeeded in translating their academic research into commercial innovation this year.
