The School of Computing in DIT has announced that the 6th Annual computer game design workshop for second level students will take place on Saturday 12th November 2011 in the Gleeson Theatre, DIT Kevin St., Dublin 8.  This is an all-day event, open to any second level student.  Over the past five years, over 2000 students have participated in these workshops and according to organisers Bryan Duggan and Hugh McAtamney, this year’s event will be the biggest ever.

The workshop is sponsored by DITThe Irish Computer Society and Microsoft Ireland and is hosted by games industry guru Ernest Adams. Ernest Adams is a veteran freelance game designer, writer, and teacher, working with the International Hobo Group. He has been in the game industry since 1989, and is the author of three books. Ernest is also the founder and first chairman of the International Game Developers' Association.

During this day-long exploration of the basics of the craft of game design, participants will learn about core mechanics, gameplay, user interface design, concept art, level design, and even get to develop a small story.  Dr. Bryan Duggan explains, “The day begins with a lecture, then challenges you to apply what you've learned to flesh out a new game design concept. The participants will then be divided the into teams and each team will work on a different game idea. At the end of the day, you'll present your results to the group and we'll discuss how they came out. Everything is supplied and there are no pre-requisites, all you need is a love of games!”

Participation in the the day is FREE (but space is limited so apply early) and all participations will receive lunch and a DIT tee-shirt – and there are opportunities to win XBOX 360s and games on the day!
