21 June 2013:  The Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairi Quinn TD, has launched Springboard 2013 today, making available 6000 upskilling opportunities in DIT, Institutes of Technology, Universities and Colleges around the country. The 6000 places are open to job-seekers, and no fees will be charged. The courses focus on areas of economic growth with good employment prospects. Offered on a part-time basis, the courses will lead to a range of Awards from Certificate to Postgraduate levels.

As part of this initiative, DIT will offer places on programmes ranging from Food Product Development to Financial Analytics, from Energy Retrofit to Game Development, and from Butchery to Medical Device Innovation.  For DIT Programme details and how to apply, please see  http://www.dit.ie/springboard/

Announcing the 6000 free places today, Minister Quinn said: "Springboard is providing a dynamic pipeline of job-ready graduates, with up-to-the-minute skills and valuable qualifications for sectors of the Irish economy that are expanding and recruiting. This practical initiative, which is part of the Government's Action Plan for Jobs, is tailored to labour-market needs and designed to stimulate economic growth."

Welcoming the announcement, the President of DIT Professor Brian Norton said: "We are very pleased to be in a position to offer a significant number of programmes and places in DIT as part of the Springboard initiative again this year. Upskilling is about building on existing qualifications and experience, and it gives all of us an opportunity to change careers or to move to another level in our current careers.  We are ready to accept applications for courses in a number of areas that are key to growth in the economy, and I would encourage people who are eligible for Springboard to contact us."
