Colleagues both past and present from both academic and non-academic streams gathered to wish a farewell to a respected and hard working colleague. Antaine Ó Faireachan, Íte’s colleague in the School of Media, spoke of how from Day One, Íte always made every effort to make him and indeed, all colleagues, welcome.

He praised her dedication to the job and thanked her for all her assistance and her friendship throughout the years. He presented her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers in recognition of her work.

Chairperson of Coiste na Gaeilge, a voluntary committee set up to promote Irish in all DIT locations, Máire Mhic Mathúna, recognised that without Íte, the committee may not exist at all. Reflecting on their close personal and professional relationships (the two attended school together), Bean Mhic Mathúna stated how Íte’s dedication to her students was obvious from the close person relationships and indeed friendships that she had forged with them.

Praising her unfailing work in promoting the Irish language both in DIT and in her role as a language and human rights activist, she cited her many forays into the media and, in particular, praised her work with Raidió na Life, the voluntary Irish language radio station.

Bean Mhic Mathúna then presented Íte with two pieces of Newbridge jewellery, a copy of the collected work of the Irish language scholarly journal published by NUI and edited by Dubhghlas de hÍde, Lia Fáil, and a first edition of Mo thuras go Meiriceá also by de hÍde, on behalf of Coiste na Gaeilge and Oifig na Gaeilge.

Íte herself thanked her friends and colleagues, many of whom had travelled long distances to be at the event for their good wishes. She also especially thanked Irish language officer Sinéad Ní Dhomhnaill for organising the retirement event.

Íte quipped that the porters in Aungier St would be happy to see her go as they often had to physically kick her out of her office late at night!

Friends from various schools and colleges in DIT, both serving and retired, members of DIT’s chaplaincy service, members of Conradh na Gaeilge, the Public Affairs Office, serving and past members of staff of Oifig na Gaeilge DIT, members of Coiste na Gaeilge DIT and Coiste Acht na dTeangacha Oifigiúla ITBÁC were there to wish Íte well.
