DIT Culinary Arts lecturer through to final stage of 2014 Valrhona Pâtisserie Championship

04 June 2014:      DIT Culinary Arts lecturer Norma Kelly has made it through to the final stage of 2014 Valrhona Pâtisserie Championship.  Now in its fourth edition, the Valrhona Pâtisserie Championship aims to promote and advance pastry chefs in Ireland with the long term goal of entering an Irish team in the World Pastry Cup, Coupe de Monde de la Pâtisserie. Valrhona has sponsored and promoted the World Pastry Cup since its 1989 inception. To secure her place in the final five, Norma faced stiff competition from all across Ireland.  She now joins a select group of chefs from top restaurants including Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud, Dublin 2, The Lady Helen Restaurant, Mount Juliet, Kilkenny, The Cliff House Hotel, Ardmore, Waterford and L’Atitude 51, Cork.

The theme for the 2014 Championship is ‘StresseD’ (StreetRestaurantDessert).The successful five competitors will each have 4 hours on the day to create two dessert applications, a modern plated restaurant dessert and a street food version, using Valrhona chocolate, which illustrate the StresseD theme. The panel of judges this year includes Loic Carbonnet (Four Seasons Hotel, London), Benoit Lorge (Lorge Chocolatier, Kenmare), Cyril Borie (L’Art du Chocolat, Kildare), Freda Wolfe (Odaios Foods, Dublin), Philippe Verdelet (Carton House, Maynooth) and Ketty Elisabeth (French Foodie in Dublin, Food Blogger ).  The winner of this year’s Championship will receive a 3 day training course (stage) in l’Ecole du Grand Chocolat, Valrhona in Tain l’Hermitage, France, including meals, accommodation and flights, a tasting menu in Maison Pic, a 3 star Michelin Restaurant in Valence, and a copy of Au Coeur des Saveurs by Frederic Bau, the illustrious executive pastry chef and director of l’Ecole du Grand Chocolat, Valrhona.

The final takes place Tuesday 10th June.
