DIT on itinerary for state visit of President of Mozambique

During his State Visit to Ireland, President Guebuza of Mozambique, and his accompanying party of Ministers and Parliamentarians, came to DIT Kevin Street to find out about technological education in DIT and in Ireland generally.  He was accompanied by Minister Joe Costello, and welcomed by Professor Brian Norton, with Professor Michael Devereux, Director and Dean of the College of Sciences and Health, and Dr. John Doran, Head of the School of Phsyics.

Colleagues and visitors gathered in the  Gleeson Theatre where examples of research taking place in DIT were on display.  Following a short presentation on the history of DIT and future plans, Professor Norton invited the Rector of the University of Lurio to join him on the stage to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions.  Colleagues from DIT have already helped to establish an Optometry programme in Lurio, and the first cohort of optometrists graduated from the programme last month.  The MOU aims to widen the collaboration between the University and DIT to a range of other areas.

Following the formal signing, Professor Norton escorted President Guebuza, Minister Costello, and guests to the National Optometry Centre.  Greeted by Ms Eva Doyle, Professor James Loughman, and Mr. Declan Hovenden, President Guebuza was brought on a guided tour of the Centre.  He was also introduced to colleagues and students who have played a part in the Mozambique Eyecare Project, which is funded by Irish Aid and led from DIT by Professor Loughman.  The project is now in its sixth year.

Following the tour, the Presidential party left DIT for a reception at the Mansion House with Lord Mayor Oisin Quinn.  DIT guests returned to Gleeson Theatre where Mary Kennedy, presenter of RTE One’s Nationwide, gave an introduction to a screening of the programme’s visit to Mozambique and the Irish connections there, including the DIT Eyecare project.  The programme can be seen on RTE Player at http://www.rte.ie/player/ie/search/?q=mozambique
