Compub / Makerbot 3D Printing Competition

Posted: 9 October, 2014

Competition Launch: Tuesday 14th of October, North House, DIT Grangegorman.

Compub in association with producers of 3D Printers Makerbot, are running a 3d Printing/ Design competition open to DIT students only but students of all disciplines in DIT are welcome to enter. The winning prize is an Apple Mac Book Air 13", with 2nd and 3rd place runners-up receiving an iPad Air and Apple TV respectively.

You can come up with almost anything – the only limit is your imagination and what the Makerbot Replicator 3D printer can print! You could design anything from accessory for an iPad, to a cover for a mobile phone, to a pair of glasses, to a child’s toy, to a model or component for a project you are working on, to that missing little part of something that you have been looking for! We are looking for interesting and creative objects and stories that show the capabilities of the Makerbot and the potential for this technology.

You can get an idea of what can be done by visiting Makerbot’s Thingiverse store (www.thingiverse.com) where you will find all sorts of things that can be printed- but don’t limit your ideas to these!

You will need to be familiar with (or willing to learn!) some 3D Design Software, such as AutoCAD, 3D Studio, Rhino, Solidworks or Inventor for example. Basically any 3D software that can export an “stl” file will work. We will take the best/ most viable 5-10 entries and will help them develop their entry to a printable part if necessary.

For a full brief on the entry procedure and to see the printers in action come to the North House in DIT Grangegorman at 1 pm on Tuesday 14th of October.

The closing date for entries to the competition will be late November so you have time to come up with your brainwaves!
