Leader in Entrepreneurship: Jim Barry, Ireland's most Trusted Leader 2015

Posted: 27 April, 2015

The latest speaker in the DIT College of Business 'Leaders in Entrepreneurship' series was Jim Barry, Managing Director of the Barry Group, who was recently recognised as Ireland's Most Trusted Leader 2015.

Pictured at the event with speaker Jim Barry, Managing Director of Barry Group, are (l to r) Colin Hughes, School of Retail & Services Management, DIT; Cathal Divilly, Managing Director, Great Place to Work; Paul O'Sullivan, Dean & Director, College of Business, DIT; and Dr. Phil Hanlon, Graduate Business School, DIT

In an energetic and thought provoking presentation,  Jim Barry gave insights into how he has built a high trust, high performance business.   Noting that an effective organisation requires a commitment to people as well as to results, he outlined how the Barry Group has invested heavily in staff development as a pre-requisite to ongoing success.

Dr. Phil Hanlon, organiser of the Speaker Series, said "Jim's utilisation of academic approaches allied to what works at a practical level is exemplified by his adaptation of the Belbin Team Styles Inventory with new categories of Explorer, Organiser, Controller and Advisor.    As far as possible staff are matched to their strengths and teams are composed of a mix of individuals analogous to a high performing sports team."

An avid reader and reflective practitioner, Jim  Barry believes in the importance of stepping outside of the business to take stock.  He has developed his own personalised brand of leadership which has led to a high performance culture and has equipped the Barry Group for future years.

This event was hosted by DIT in partnership with Great Place to Work Institute.
