A DIT research centre, 3S Group,  participated in a major national health conference organised by HSE National Clinical Programmes and presented findings based on their work with the Acute Medicine Programme.  The programme, led by Professor Garry Courtney and Dr. Orlaith O’Reilly, has been funded by HSE.

The conference was the first collaborative event incorporating five major National Clinical Programmes: Acute Medicine, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care and Older People. These five areas affect most medical and surgical patients in Ireland.  The Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar TD, who attended the conference, highlighted the benefits of an integrated approach to medicine and spoke about some of the significant developments taking place, despite current challenges.

Acknowledging the value of the research carried out by 3S Group in DIT, Minister Varadkar highlighted the planning of the new Emergency Department in Tallaght Hospital and the innovative solutions to address the waiting time in the hospital. He praised the use of mathematical and system simulation approaches in this project.

3S Group was established as a research centre in the DIT College of Business in 2008.   Dr. Amr Arisha, Director of the Centre, explains “Our research path is focussed on developing an integrated solution framework,  leveraging existing mathematical and systems tools including system analysis, value stream mapping, stochastic modelling, game theory, simulation and optimisation. We place the quest for operations excellence at the heart of many contemporary challenges in healthcare applications. Working with leading Irish hospitals over the last 8 years has resulted in offering innovative solutions to their Emergency Department long waiting times. 3S Group was also commissioned by HSE in 2010 to develop a smart planning framework for elderly care in order to effectively allocate beds in nursing homes and acute hospitals.”
