UN FAO hosts a workshop on Globalisation & Food Safety for DIT M.Sc. programme in Food Safety Management students at their Rome HQ.

The UN Food & Agriculture Organisation together with the Codex Alimentarius Commission hosted a workshop titled “Food Safety and Globalisation, -Opportunities, Challenges and Solutions” for students of the DIT MSc. Food Safety Management at Cathal Brugha Street.

They were addressed by the Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, Ms. Awilo Ochieng Pernet and its Secretary, Mr. Tom Heilandt. Codex has a major role in setting international food safety standards which facilitate global trade in food.  Ms Mary Kenny (a DIT Cathal Brugha St alumnus), and Ms Sarah Cahill, Food Safety Officers  with FAO, spoke of the role of the FAO in ensuring food safety in food production and trade in developing countries.

Students went on to meet staff of the UN World Food Programme (WFP).  The WFP spend over $3 billion annually feeding 80million of the world’s poorest people. Course participants together with WFP staff, analysed role of food safety management in the production and distribution of food aid in emergency relief situations. 

Earlier in the week the students met staff of the European Food Safety Authority in Parma, Italy who discussed the risk assessment process involved in ensuring that the European food supply chain is kept safe for consumers.  The International Study Tour was organised with the assistance of the Mr. Damien Kelly from the Irish Embassy in Rome.
