School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering host Graduates & Friends Reception

The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (SEEE) hosted a reception for graduates and friends last week.

Welcoming them back to Kevin Street, Professor Michael Conlon, Head of School, briefed graduates on major developments in the School and in DIT, including the historic move to the new campus at Grangegorman and the joint bid with IT Tallaght and IT Blanchardstown to become Ireland’s first Technological University. ‌

Major School Developments

With 800 students and 90 members of staff the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is the largest in Ireland.  Discipline areas include control engineering, communications engineering, electronic engineering, electrical power engineering and computer engineering, while the range of programmes includes electrical apprenticeship, Levels 6, 7 8 and 9 in the electrical/electronic and associated areas,  as well as MPhil and PhD by research. 

The School has also recently developed a key partnership with the East China University of Technology (ECUT) in Nanchang, South-East China.  Students from ECUT now undertake the first two years of their degree programme in their home university before coming to DIT to complete the BE in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Research activities

There is a large community of active researchers in the School, with some key research areas that include:

  • Antenna and High Frequency Research Centre – led by Prof Max Ammann, the Centre has a long record of success in research and development in Antenna design and application and has attracted substantial funding.  The group is involved in a new project on reconfigurable antennas as part of the SFI multi-institutional research centre, Connect.
  • Communications Network Research Institute (CNRI) – led by Prof Mark Davis, CNRI has had considerable commercialisation success to date, resulting in two spin-out companies - OptiWi-fi Ltd and Vopti Technologies Ltd.  OptiWi-fi technology is now deployed in over 1000 hot-spots across the O2 Wifi UK network and allows network operators to monitor and better manage their Wi-Fi hotspots in order to provide better performance.

Professor Gerry Farrell, Head of the Photonics Research Centre, Director  & Dean the College of Engineering & Built Environment at DIT

  • Photonics Research Centre (PRC) - Prof Gerry Farrell is director and Prof Yulia Semenova is the Senior Researcher of the PRC, which undertakes research with a particular emphasis on optical fibre sensing at macro and micro scales. These include development of novel fibre optic sensors for temperature, strain, vibration, gases and biological analytes. Typical application areas include smart engineering structures and smart materials, sensors for minimally invasive surgical instruments, acoustic detection in gas/oil pipelines and medical diagnostics. Over the last five years PRC successfully completed 12 research projects funded by Enterprise Ireland, SFI and others, and has active international collaborations with researchers in the UK, China, India, Poland, Canada and Australia.
  • tPOT Research Group - Dr Damon Berry is convenor of tPOT, which stands for People Orientated Technology and  covers areas such as biomedical signal engineering, human-machine interfaces, assistive technology and health informatics.   The Group includes Dr Ted Burke, Dr John McGrory, Paula Kelly, Dr Jane Courtney, Frank Duignan, and Paul Stacey from IT Blanchardstown.  
  • Electrical Power Research Centre (EPRC) – Prof Michael Conlon is Director of EPRC, which is focused on areas of electrical power engineering and power electronics.  This work includes the development and application of custom power devices as well as the investigation and analysis of electrical power systems. Professor Conlon is joined by Michael Farrell, Dr Malabika Basu and Dr Keith Sunderland.

DIT Grangegorman

DIT has begun the move to the new campus at Grangegorman, with the first 1000 students now based on the campus in a cluster of beautifully restored 19th century buildings, surrounded by landscaped gardens and playing fields on the large city-centre site.

In February 2016 the first new building  - the Greenway Hub - will open, with dedicated space for start-ups and budding entrepreneurs as well as excellent laboratory facilities for 90 researchers from the Environment, Sustainability and Health Institute (ESHI), including researchers from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

In September 2018, the entire School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering will be the first School from the College of Engineering and Built Environment to move to the new campus to facilities that will transform the student experience.   Located in the new Central Quad the students of SEEE will have access to purpose built learning and teaching facilities including  heavy machine laboratories and rooftop renewable energy and communications facilities. 

Technological University for Dublin

Alumni & Friends Bernard Keavney, Caitriona Lambert, Eamonn McGovern and Sean McCarthy

DIT is working in an alliance with IT Blanchardstown and IT Tallaght, towards the establishment of Ireland’s first Technological University.   ITT and ITB have considerable activity in the area of electrical and electronic engineering, ensuring that the partnership will greatly increase the reach and expertise in this field overall.

While the concept of a Technological University is new to Ireland, it is well established elsewhere in Europe, Australia and Canada.  The Technological University for Dublin will be a multi-level, professional and outward-facing university, that is practice-led and research informed, and is strongly connected to our partners in industry and the communities it serves.

The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineerign looks forward to organising future events and opportunities to connect with graduates worldwide.
