Civil Engineering students build pasta bridges
Posted: 21 January, 2016Each year the School of Civil & Structural Engineering in DIT organises a competition that challenges students to design and construct a bridge using spaghetti.

This year’s competition took place in December and was won by a team of Irish and international students - Alice Becker Londero, Oisin Gartlan, Rico Raymundo and Renato Reis.
Congratulating the winners, Una Beagon, Assistant Head of School, said “This is an exacting competition. Teams can only use a maximum of 1kg of spaghetti and they must design a bridge to span a distance of 1m. But it’s not the highest load that wins…. Efficiency is key, and the winning design is based on an analysis of how much the bridge can support in relation to its own self weight! The winning team was truly international, including Alice and Renato from Brazil and our own DIT students, Rico and Oisin.”
