DIT Sports Awards 2016
Posted: 18 April, 2016International sporting heroes and Intervarsity title holders, team players and individual sports stars from across DIT all came together for the 19th annual DIT Sports Awards ceremony held at the Gleeson Theatre in DIT Kevin Street last week.

DIT Club of the Year – Mountaineering Club

Each year DIT recognises the outstanding contribution of individual student athletes across many diverse sporting disciplines for their achievements in sport. This year’s awards ceremony was extended to reflect not only the achievements of individual students in DIT but also to the contribution of the sports clubs to campus life and the importance of participation by all students in sport and physical activity. Guests of honour for the ceremony was Michael Conlan one of Ireland’s most successful boxers, Olympic Bronze medallist, and first ever Male World Gold Medallist.
The awards, which have been in existence since 1998, aim to recognise the accomplishments of DIT students on the sporting fields and arenas of Ireland and abroad. This year 10 awards were presented from individual All-Star Awards to the Club of the Year Award and Club Executive of the Year Award.
The Mountaineering Club, one of the fastest growing clubs in DIT with more than 270 members and which has had one of their most active seasons to date, was crowned DIT Club of the Year.

Intervarsity Cricket champions, DIT Cricket Club
The title of Minority Sports Club of the Year went to the DIT Cricket Club - the Intervarsity Cricket Champions 2015!
Honours were also bestowed on individual students for their magnificent sporting achievements including Luke Thompson from the DIT Basketball Club, James Bollard from the DIT Rugby Club, Darragh Nelson from the DIT GAA Club, Danielle Randle from the DIT Snooker and Pool Club, Niall Cooney from the DIT Soccer Club and Orla Beegan from the DIT Camogie Club.
This year’s recipients will now join the DIT sporting hall of fame which includes previous award winners such as David Gillick, Kieran Bergin, Denise Gaule, Aidan O’Shea, Lee Cole and Darren O’Neill to name but a few

Speaking at the awards ceremony Dr. Noel O’Connor, Director of Student Services acknowledged the positive role that Sport and Physical Activity plays in the lives of students in DIT. “The variety of sports and physical activity, the news headlines and colourful photos that your clubs have been responsible for deliver ‘an amazing student experience’.”
