DIT Conservatory present concert to celebrate centenary of Brian Boydell's birth

Posted: 15 March, 2017

In celebration of the centenary of Brian Boydell’s birth, DIT Conservatory presents “Confrontations in a Cathedral”, a concert in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin on Saturday 25 March 2017 at 8pm.

Featuring the DIT Brass Ensemble, DIT Percussion Ensemble, DIT Symphony Orchestra and DIT Choral Society, and soloists, ‘Confrontations in a Cathedral’ features music by Brian Boydell, David Bremner, Francis Poulenc and Anton Bruckner.

Boydell wrote ‘Confrontations in a Cathedral’ in 1986 for organ, harp and percussion to explore the specific architectural characteristics of St Patrick’s Cathedral. Inspired by his work, this concert will explore further musical confrontations within the rich sound world of the Cathedral. David Bremner beautifully blends the worlds of classical and traditional music in his work for organ and uilleann pipes. The organ is centre-stage for a performance of Poulenc’s magical ‘Organ Concerto’ scored for strings and timpani. The award-winning DIT Choral Society perform three sacred motets by Bruckner in combination with trombones and organ, and the DIT Brass and Percussion Ensemble revel in the majestic acoustic of this historic Cathedral.

Denise Kelly-McDonnell (Harp) and Noel Eccles (Percussion), who took part in the premier performance of Boydell’s ‘Confrontations in a Cathedral’ in 1986 during the Dublin International Organ Festival, will perform Boydell's work, once again, in the acoustic of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.

Senior Lecturer at DIT, Dr Cliona Doris commented on the event, “St Patrick’s Cathedral is a beautiful setting for this concert celebrating collaboration between the Conservatory's performance programmes including vocal, orchestral, keyboard, traditional music and composition. It will be particularly exciting to hear Brian Boydell's 'Confrontations in a Cathedral' in the environment imagined by the composer."
