The conference held at Lake Orta in Italy is a chance for members of the International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage (IRTP) Group to share research findings into religious tourism and pilgrimage related themes.
For centuries, religious and spiritual factors were amongst the most common reasons to travel and the latest available data from the World Trade Organisation show that religious travel is still hugely popular with a worldwide turnover exceeding $18 billion. It was this continued popularity that presenters and attendees of the IRTP conference examined over the three-day conference.
Dr Kevin Griffin opened the event with his colleagues, Razaq Raj and Carlos Fernandes, and he also gave a talk on the role of the leader in religious tourism. Keynote speakers at the event included Dr Ahmad Jamal, Senior Lecturer in Marketing and Strategy at Cardiff University who talked about the role of religiosity and culture in tourism and Dr Maria Leppäkari, Associate Professor of Comparative Religion at the Swedish Theological Institute in Jerusalem who discussed managing religion and religious tourism in a Holy Place.
