DIT students design & build a single-seat racing car

Posted: 31 August, 2017

A group of final year Mechanical and Manufacturing & Design engineering students from DIT designed and built a single-seat racing car and entered it in the iMechE formula student competition, which took place at Silverstone in July.

Since 2010, supported by a team of four expert staff at DIT, industry sponsorship and access to a range of workshops, specialist tools and pre-testing at Mondello Park, an integrated group of final year Mechanical and Manufacturing & Design engineering students have competed in the IMechE Formula Student motor racing competition

For this year's team, the work began last September, when a multi-disciplinary team came together to research, design, select, manufacture, test and validate a wide range of parts and components in order to build a single-seat racing car that can accelerate from standstill to 75 metres in less than 6 seconds.

Over 80 teams from across the world competed in the IMechE Formula Student motor racing competition this year, which involved a wide range of design, cost, sustainability and business events culminating in a racing finale at Silverstone. So they could race the car on the final day, DIT Formula entered its design in a number of key scrutineering events such as tilt and breaking testing. The team were awarded the full complement of badges and placed 9th overall in the vehicle design category.
