Music students dazzle at DIT graduation ceremonies

The first and second conferring ceremonies for the DIT Class of 2017 took place in the magnificent surroundings that is St. Patrick’s Cathedral over the last two weekends.

College of Engineering and Built Environment students eagerly await for their graduation ceremony to begin

As part of the celebrations, a group of talented vocalists and musicians from the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama performed a selection of arrangements for the enthralled audience of graduands, their families and DIT staff.

On the second Saturday, Maria Matthews and Meabh McKenna performed ‘I Dreamt I Dwelt’ by Michael Balfe and ‘My Lagan Love’ arranged by Hamilton Harry

Maria Matthews is a final year vocal student in the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, Studying under Sinead Campbell Wallace and Aoife O'Sullivan. She has performed in the 3 Arena, the National Concert Hall, The Royal College of Physicians, St. Patricks Cathedral and St. Mel’s Cathedral Longford to name a few.

Meabh McKenna is a final year student in the BMus degree in the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, studying under Denise Kelly. She has performed internationally at the Wales Harp Festival, the Edinburgh International Harp Festival and at home in venues across the country as a soloist, member of DIT Harp Ensemble, and as the principal harpist of the DIT Symphony Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland among others.

Also on last Saturday, Sarah Luttrell performed ‘Minnelied (Love Song), Franz Schubert and ‘The Sally Gardens’ arranged by Benjamin Britten, words by W.B. Yeats. Sarah is in her final year of the Bachelor of Music programme at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, studying with Colette McGahon. Sarah was accompanied by Tara Viscardi on Harp. Tara is in her final year of the Bachelor of Music programme at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, studying with Dr Cliona Doris.

The last performance on Saturday, 21 October was by Susie Gibbons who sang ‘O Mio Babbino Caro, Puccini and I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls’ accompanied by Tara Viscardi Susie is a graduate of Psychology from UCD and is currently studying voice in DIT under Colette McGahon-Tosh. Susie’s most recent engagements include performing as a soloist in the 3arena for Ennio Morricone’s Farewell Tour and also with the choir for Hans Zimmer’s Live Tour in Dublin in May. 

Susie also performed on Saturday, 14 October and she accompanied by Ciara Booth on Harp, Ciara is a third-year student at the DIT Conservatory of Music studying for her Degree in Performance and performs with the DIT Harp Ensemble.

Finally, Amy Ní Fhearraigh performed ‘Oh! Mio Babino Caro’ by Puccini and ‘I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls’ by Balfe on Saturday, October 14th. Amy is a Soprano and graduated from the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama in 2015, with a 1st class Honours Degree in Music.  Since then she has débuted with the National Concert Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra and will be performing with the newly formed Irish National Opera early next year.

DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama is celebrating three decades of the Bachelor of Music in Performance degree with a gala concert ‘Past and Present’ in the National Concert Hall on November 1st, more information is available here.
