Paul Horan BSc PhD

Obtained a BSc(Hons) degree in Experimental Physics at University College Galway in 1984.

Worked with Prof. Werner Blau in the Physics Dept. at Trinity College Dublin from 1984 to 1988 and obtained his PhD degree with a thesis entitled "The Linear and Nonlinear Optical Spectroscopy of Small Semiconductor Particles". Remained as a member of staff in the Physics Dept for the following year.

In 1989-1990 went as a visiting researcher to the Central Research Labs of Hitachi Ltd., Japan, under their HIVIPs scheme, to work in the area of optical computing and optical neural networks. On returning to Ireland in 1990 joined the staff of the Hitachi Dublin Laboratory, situated in Trinity College, and continued research in the area of optical computing and optoelectronic devices, in collaboration with the group of Prof. John Hegarty in the Physics Dept. at Trinity College Dublin, other Hitachi Labs, and others.

This work is being continued under the EU ESPRIT funded project SPOEC (Smart Pixel Optoelectronic Interconnects). This is a collaborative project headed by Heriot-Watt University (Department of Physics), with University of Glasgow (MBE and Optoelectronics Research Groups), the Paul Scherrer Institute, Zurich, and Supelec in Metz and Gif-sur-Yvette. The Dublin activity concentrates on improving the performance of solid state III-V optical modulators.

Appointed to permanent staff of DIT in May 1997 as Assistant Head of School.
