Research in recent year has shown damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on human cornea. Many UVR-induced eye diseases such pterygium or cortical cataracts occur in tissues underlying the cornea which is the first line of natural UVR protection to ocular tissues. The depletion of the ozone layer increases natural solar UVR and results in a greater awareness of the adverse effects of UVR. Therefore, there is a need for precise quantification and localization of UVR light field in the human eye at the anterior ocular surface and the related use of UV-blocking contact lenses.


This research concentrates on peripheral light focusing (PLF) – a phenomenon in which incoming of light is directed towards the temporal limbus of the eye from angles between 100 to 120 degree with respect to the normal sight line, and focused laterally across the eye on to the scleral limbal region of cornea. This PhD research project is based on two methods to explore the ocular UVR light field. Initially, research is concentrated on ray-tracing analysis of corneal PLF phenomenon based on the Gullstrand-LeGrand model eye and a model rubber eye simulated with the RayCad modeling software. Then using the model results design, construct and test a fibre optic spectrometer based system to quantify the UV-visible transmittance of the cornea in vivo and quantify the protective effects of contact lenses placed on the cornea.


The project is based on a previous PhD research project carried out by Dr David Fleming and related new literature.

Krzysztof Ptasinski commenced his PhD research in December 2007 and will carry out his research under Dr James Walsh for a further 3-4 years.
